Five Chemicals Banned In Europe (Sold in the USA)

Did you know there are toxic food chemicals allowed to be used in the foods you consume and feed your children? And what’s even more shocking if that many other industrialized nations, especially in Europe, have tested some of these chemicals, deemed them unsafe and banned them from their food chains.

However, in the good ol’ USA, we have a totally different approach to food safety. Here, the Food and Drug Administration uses the “innocent until proven harmful” tactic, allowing ingredients into our foods sometimes for decades until and unless someone can show there’s a problem.

Some of these chemicals can cause symptoms from diarrhea to hormone disruption and some are suspected of causing life-threatening diseases like cancer.

So before you take another bite, check out  this list (mean to be a starting point to your own research and self-empowerment with respect to the foods that you feed your amazing body):

  1. rBGH and rBST – available in Milk
  2. Olestra – available in packaged, highly-processed foods
  3. BVO – available in soft drinks
  4. Potassium bromate (bromated flour) – available in baked goods
  5. DPA – available in Apples
4 Tips to an Effective Cleanse at Home

Many people find cleanses and detoxes appealing as a way to reaffirm a commitment to healthy eating, especially at the start of a new year. While I certainly understand the desire dial down cravings for sweets and processed foods and create a pathway toward eating well over the long haul, the trouble I see with juicing and other similar cleanses is that too often, they leave people hangry, sluggish and distracted by constant thoughts of food. 

Cleansing can also lead to unwanted issues, like constipation (from lack of fiber) and bloating (due to excess fructose from juice cleanses).

If you want to reboot your diet in the new year without the unnecessary restriction and potential downsides that comes with detoxes and cleanses, clean up your eating with these coach-approved tips instead. 

GO GREEN (AND ORANGE AND PURPLE AND RED)

Most Americans aren’t anywhere close to meeting their needs. (90 percent fall short of vegetable recommendations and 85 percent aren’t meeting their fruit quota.) To help you boost your intake and your overall health, add sliced strawberries to your oatmeal at breakfast, opt for a summer salad at lunch, and fill half your dinner plate with a steamed vegetable medley. 

And don’t forget snacks! Enjoy sliced carrots, celery and jicama with hummus or a little guacamole with gluten free crackers.

CUT OUT ADDED SWEETENERS

While Americans fall short on fruits and veggies, we’re overdoing it on sugar, consuming close to 20 teaspoons a day. Health authorities suggest capping added sugars at 6 teaspoons (equivalent to about 25 g) a day for women and 9 teaspoons (or about 36 g) for men. Challenge yourself to cut back on added sugar from sweetened yogurts, cereals and granola bars, as well as the usual suspects (soda, cookies, ice cream, cookies and other baked goods). You’ll appreciate the natural sweetness of fruit so much more when you cut unnecessary added sweeteners from your diet.

BE GOOD TO YOUR GUT

Many people are drawn to cleanses to reset their GI system, and these regular cleanses can have amazing benefits! While trying to flush out toxins, take measures to boost your gut health so it can do its job well. 

A healthy gut is important for almost every aspect of wellness — from boosting your mood to helping you sleep, from weight management to preventing chronic diseases, the list goes on and on. To reboot your diet and reset your gut, remember to do a mild, food-based “reset cleanse” on a regular basis.

Whiter Teeth At Home In 5 Minutes A Day

You love teas and herbal remedies as much as I do… but after months of drinking teas, coffee and other drinks, your teeth are looking a bit yellowish… what do you?

1. Coconut swish / oil puling

You don’t want to aspirate some of the oil into your lungs

Always spit out the oil in the trash, never in the pipes

ALWAYS brush your teeth immediately after oil pulling.

2. Activated charcoal

Gets rid of free radicals and pollutants too

Use a thin layer of charcoal

Brush LIGHTLY, never too harsh

Do it 3-4 days in a row, then rest for 3-4 days

After brushing gently, I follow with another brush and clear water, to remove the charcoal excess from my tongue, gums, etc.

6 Sugar Craving Hacks

Today, most of us struggle with sugar cravings and more than a few of us are downright sugar addicted! So what to do?

While there are a dozen options I can recommend, especially involving herbal remedies, I wanted to share here the top 6 hacks: quick and easy ways that are scientifically proven ways to help you reduce your sugar cravings in the short term and give you a chance to slowly learn to control and reduce your sugar intake.

1. Breathe – activates parasympathetic nervous system
2. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar – Take it in pills or liquid (1 TSP in a glass of water)
3. Cinnamon spice – use in your smoothies, oatmeal, breakfasts and even soups
4. Shake around or walk around for just 5-10 mins drastically reduces your post meal sugar spike
5. Eat sour foods. When you crave sugar, eat foods that are sour and bitter. This helps to counteract sweet cravings. Include bitter ingredients like endive, dandelion greens and kale into your green smoothies or green juices. I also recommend drinking lemon-infused water daily.
6. Add fat to your meals – slows down your gastric empty

Detox Oil Massage (Abhyanga)

An Abhyanga Massage is a warm oil, self-administered massage that helps balance your physical constitution, moisturize the skin, helps the skin to release toxins, and is known to help tone muscles all over your body.

You can use a variety of oils and Ayurveda, the science of life and Eastern medicine traditions in India, recommends sesame or almond oils for Vata types, coconut and sunflower for Pitta and corn and olive oils for balancing Kapha. However, if you don’t know your Ayurvedic type, do not despair: simply pick sesame and almond oils in winter and coconut or sunflower in summer.

The massage can be done in the morning before your shower, or in the evening before bed. I often do it once a week in the evenings.

How to Do The Massage

  1. Start by warming the oil to skin temperature, and drizzle a small amount of oil into the palms of your hands. (Warm the oil by holding the bottle under warm water, never use a microwave).
  2. Massage the top of your scalp (on days when you wash your hair), pay particular attention to the circumference of your ears, and the soles of your feet.
  3. Massage with long strokes on your limbs, and round strokes on your joints.
  4. It’s best to leave the oil on the body for 20 minutes before washing it off in a warm shower or bath.
  5. Try not to use a lot of soap, let the water rinse out the excess and the towel get rid of the rest. At the end of the shower, your skin should feel silky but not oily.

Best DYI Mosquito Repellent

Mosquitoes are a pain! They can ruin your picnic, sports event, gardening, hike or fun in the ski! And if you’ve ever been anywhere in the tropics, you know there’s no way you can enjoy an evening outdoors in a pair of shorts of a cute little summer dress because they will attack you and use your body as a Thanksgiving feast!

Sadly, plenty of the popular mosquito repellents out there are made with chemicals that will get into your body through the pores of your skin, eyes and nose. It’s literally like voluntarily spraying yourself with a pesticide… no thank you!

Fortunately there are natural alternatives to the toxic and chemical laden commercial mosquito repellents. Today’s video will show you one of my favorites (and one that my family in Puerto Rico uses regularly):

Ingredients:

1.5 ounces vodka or tequila, 25 drops peppermint essential oil and 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil.

Method: Use a clean and sterilized spray bottle for this. Add vodka to the spray bottle. Now, add 25 drops of peppermint essential oil followed by 1 teaspoon jojoba oil. Shake well and your very own mosquito repellent spray is ready!

Spray onto exposed skin and/or clothing, avoiding eyes and mucous membranes.

What Does It Mean When You Crave Salt (And How To Stop It)

Do you feel like you crave salt regularly? Think you eat way too may salty foods? Or maybe not enough?

Yes, eating too much salt is bad, but eating too little is bad too.

Salt is necessary to control the balance of body fluids, provide vital trace minerals and is crucial for growth and reproduction.

So do you have cravings? Check out the video:

Do you Crave for salty foods.

  • Cravings for foods that have a lot of salt in them even if they don’t taste salty. Examples include bread, crackers, cookies, TV dinners, and canned foods?
  • Cravings for sausages, bacon, olives, seasoning blends
  • Do you have fatigue, low energy and mood swings.
  • Muscle cramps or slow recovery from exercise.

If so, here’s what I recommend you do:

  • Test your adrenals and hormone levels. Cortisol and other stress hormone issues may be affected by sodium deficiency so check with your doctor asap.
  • Pay attention to how you feel after eating foods with a lot of sodium. Listen to the cues of your body, maybe it is trying to tell you something!
  • Pay attention to exercise. If you sweat a lot, rehydrate with a mixture of water and himalayan pink salt.
  • Be present and celebrate where you are right now. This will help you reduce stress levels.
  • Add some Himalayan sea salt to a big glass of water during dinner. This will help you not go to the bathroom a thousand times per day or at night.
Best Way To Flavor Water

So we need water to survive and we are also always told to have supplement this and drink herb that for better health. So I’ve found a really awesome way to combine the 2!

My herbal professor used to say never drink water alone, add herbs to get all the benefits and healing properties of the herbs. Perfect way to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Here are the favorite things I add to my water every day.

 

Cinnamon

It’s warming to the body and delicious in flavor and also awesome for you too. It is loaded with minerals, including manganese and calcium, and contains essential oils with potent anti-inflammatory properties.

Apple cider vinegar

Great at regulating the body’s acidity (pH) levels, easing digestive discomfort, relieving heartburn, helping to prevent seasonal illness, and reducing inflammation.

Fennel

Fennel is sweet and aromatic and can help those who need to have something sweet or are used to sweet drinks with meals. Fennel is known to have antioxidant, digestive, carminative, and anti-flatulent properties. So great to take after a heavy meal and when you feel gassy.

Black Salt

Not the crappy table salt but a pinch of the unprocessed, amazing salt that have lots of trace minerals that a lot of us are deficient in.

Mint Leaves

Everybody loves mint. And we are perfectly familiar with it. But did you know that as a palate cleanser, mint can help you better digest your food? It also soothes stomachs and help reduce inflammation

Sage

This is really high in antioxidants so it can help protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals, which often results in impaired immunity, and chronic disease. People in the Caribbean use it to shorten the length of a cold and heal laryngitis.

How To Use Palo Santo To Cleanse Your Space

Spiritual cleanses are as important as physical/nutritional ones. And they often go hand in hand. Just like going deep to cleanse your body is key to weight loss and overall health, going deep and addressing our emotional, spiritual and mental home is key to getting rid of behaviors that don’t serve us, clear them out and replace them with ones that help us grow and evolve.

Many years ago in my native Puerto Rico, I discovered a wonderful bark that has been used for centuries in South America for its energetically cleansing and healing properties and now it’s becoming more and more popular in the rest of the world: Palo Santo (Spanish for Holy Wood).

How To Cleanse The Home With Palo Santo

This is the easiest and safest way to use Palo Santo to clear the energy of your home or work space:

  • Burn 1-2 sticks at a time. Hold the bark at 45 degree angle and ignite the sticks. Let them burn for 45 seconds then blow out and allow the smoke to spread.
  • Close all doors and windows to keep as much of the smoke indoors.
  • Set your intentions for the energy clearing of your home. Recite your favorite prayers, mantras and/or chants out loud.
  • Move around your space (including bathrooms, kitchen and dens). Place close attention to the windows, door entrances, pipes and any other areas with access to the outside of the home/space.
  • When done, place the remaining stick in a fire proof bowl (metal or clay) and leave to smoke in a safe area (away from loose fabrics or furniture) overnight.
  • In the morning, open all doors and windows, to allow the excess of smoke (shouldn’t be too much) to take away any lingering heavy or negative energy.
Home-Made Candida Treatment

This home-made candida treatment is my go-to remedy to get rid of the symptoms of candida in a flash. An anti candida diet is key to control candida overgrowth but this video will show you one of the best home remedies for candida I’ve seen. Hope it helps!
