Make Positivism the Best Motivator For Change

It is part of our human nature to get a boost of energy, led by adrenaline, when we get angry. When you see or experience something that angers you, chances are you use it as a motivator to change, to make sure it never happens again.

Angers leads to desire, to hope and action. But what about positivism? What about the radical idea of using a positive attitude to inspire hope, change and action. Hope to understand that it is possible.

Change to ensure that good trumps evil every time. Action to progress towards enlightenment every day.

But how? How do we turn away from a using negative energy as a powerful motivator to positivism as a tool for positive change?

The first course of action is remembering the power of your own mind. Your mind is capable of magnificent things. There are lots of talents in you waiting to be developed and used for your own good and the good of all.

When your life in this light, it becomes easier to be motivated to change in a more peaceful, joyful way.

Your thoughts are powerful tools that, when used positively, can help you create realities you never thought possible. Following are some techniques to help use the power of a positive mind to affect change in the world:

  1. Don’t give anger and negative thinking any power. Thoughts and ideas only become powerful when you, the thinker, empower them. If you have an angry thought and decide to ignore it, it will become easier to move ahead without being affected by the negative thinking.
  1. Use positive thinking to counter negativity. If someone tells you that you will never be financially independent, you should automatically tell yourself, “I am going to be financially independent faster than originally planned”. Your initial reaction may be anger and frustration but using positive language will help you change how you feel about this experience without losing motivation.  The same works for other aspects of your life. When thoughts about relationships come to your mind, for example, and you start thinking that you will never fall in love again, you counter-act by saying, “I will meet a special person and will enjoy a loving, meaningful, long-lasting relationship soon.” By doing so, you will take the power away from your negative thoughts, and give it to a positive one.
  1. Be aware of your thoughts and try recognizing them as negative or positive. Continue to nurture the positive thoughts, and write down on a piece of paper as many of the negative ones as you can remember. Then read through the list, and analyze them, recognizing that they are simply negative ideas. Think of them as pieces of your mind that you just removed and placed on the paper, ready to be disposed of. Once on the paper and out of your head, they can remain there forever. Quietly acknowledge this and part ways with your negative thoughts.

Your thoughts are some of the few things in the world that are 100% under your control.

Nothing else truly is. And very few things are as powerful as those very thoughts. Use them and allow them to empower you, and you will soon be a catalyst for amazing positive change in the world.

How To Keep An Open Mind

Your ideals, values, and belief system have all been shaped and influenced by your background.

Your thoughts are influenced mostly by what others taught you about where you come from, the color of your skin, your religion, the political views of the majority, what your ancestors believed in, etc.

It was important to teach you what to be, what to think, and what to believe in.

It was especially important to teach you that those ideas are the only ones to follow, the only ones that are correct, and the ones that will bring you safety and happiness. Most of you were not allowed to think outside those ideals and if you did, most likely, you were regarded as a rebel, ungrateful, or an unworthy member of the group.

Your parents or guardians likely had the best of intentions to help you grow into a happy, healthy individual that fits in the culture around. To help attain that, they may have taught or tried to teach you ideas that may be discriminatory, stereotypical, and wrong about people that do not belong in your cultural, social, or racial group.

The intention was to teach you to be the best person you can become, but instead (and most likely unconsciously) they may have helped you harbor feelings associated with a narrow mindset that does not respect the divinity in yourself and others.

Instead of nurturing feelings of disrespect or self-centeredness that may limit your potential for growth, be open to the idea that you are part of the world, and the world and all of its components are part of you, both good and bad.

It is then up to you to have an open mind about people, ideas, and everything else you encounter. An open mind will allow you to learn…

When you learn, you understand, and when you understand, you learn to love.

This is the only way you can objectively give and receive. When you have an open mind, you can see the beauty and love that the universe has to offer, and you can get so much more from it.

If you see in others love, kindness, compassion, and understanding, you will receive exactly that.

Some of the principles to help you have or maintain an open mind include:

  1. Allow your mind to make positive choices.
  1. Become conscious of and admit any fears or wrongdoings and make an effort to rectify them as soon as possible.
  1. Remember that opening your heart and mind heals because it is a natural function of your body to rid itself of anything that hurts or sickens it.
  1. Talk to someone, write, or express your fears, doubts, and mistakes to create a sense of release that will bring positive energies to your life.
  1. Remember that you are one with the universe and all its members. Use the positive energies that the universe has to offer to your advantage by offering and giving some of the good in you.
  1. There is no one superior or inferior to you. Support this thought with knowledge. If, for example, you dislike a religious or social group or disagree with someone because of his/her views and preferences, offer to learn about it before engaging in fruitless discussions and pre-judgments that will enrage you and prevent you from reaching a peaceful state.
  1. Keep track of judgments, negative influences, and actions. Continue raising your awareness of what limits your thoughts and feelings so that you can easily change them as soon as they arise.
  1. When you find yourself in stressful situations that may anger you and bring to light discriminatory practices, remember that even if you don’t agree with something it does not make it wrong. Similarly, the fact that you agree with something does not necessarily make it right.
  1. Be an instrument of peace. As Saint Francis of Assisi said in his now famous prayer, allow the divine energy to make you the means by which the world around you (including yourself) finds understanding, pardon, hope, faith, light, and joy.
  1. What you think and what you do affects other people. Make sure that the energies you send out of your body (even in the form of thought) are open, kind, and understanding. Be open to receive the same tenfold.

6 Ideas To Positively Control Your Mind (Not The Other Way Around)

Buddha once said: “What you Think, You Become”.

Thousands of years later, author Robert Collier said: “All power is from within and is therefore under our own control”.

There have been hundreds of great thinkers from Buddah our modern-day mentors telling us, in one way or another that our minds are incredibly powerful and that we have the power to direct our thoughts and emotions to help us attain happiness, peace and spirituality.

But how many of us truly follow these principles? How many of us honestly can say that we have control over our minds, not the other way around.

I certainly have been an object of my own negative thoughts and emotions and have let my mind control me and steer me into a place that only leads to frustration, confusion and negativity. Intellectually, I know that I can control my mind and that this control is the key to manifesting great things in my life. Yet, sometimes it seems harder than others.

The key then is in finding ideas that will help you take control and maintain it. If you can take control of what you believe to be true, you can create a present that fits your life, values, and desires and can ultimately shape your future.

If you feel that because you tried to and failed in the past, it is not possible to succeed, then you must work on learning how to change your belief system so that it works for you instead of against you.

These general rules will help you change your belief system into one that works best for you:

  1. Do not let fear and pain from past experiences guide what you will and will not do. Up to now, you have lived in fear of getting disappointed over and over. Fear breeds nothing but more fear and disappointment. Staying in a fearful state is not advisable at all. Why not keep on trying? When you are trying, there is always hope that this time your venture may work. This mentality fills you with positive, empowering energy to help you keep moving forward.

  1. Stay away from pessimists. Do not worry about the details. Just keep working towards your goals. Optimists create discipline and persistence that allow them to always see the “glass half full”. Optimists are constantly on the move and constantly learning how to get better at what they do. When you are optimistic, you develop confidence that helps you maintain a positive outlook on life.

  1. Remind yourself that change is good and stagnation is bad. When you are not moving or evolving, when you realize that what is creating pain and suffering, you will get up, move, and make a drastic change for good. Realize that a particular belief is causing you more harm than good, and then find a new, positive belief to replace the old one with.

  1. Question every belief you may have. As I have mentioned before, don’t take beliefs from your culture, parents, or society for granted. Educate yourself and find out what, why, and how a belief came to be. You will realize that your perception of the “truth” is sometimes coerced by biased aspects of your particular surroundings.

  1. Take all appropriate actions to help you move to a more positive, empowering belief system by practicing new behaviors over and over until they become part of your daily routine.

  1. Support your new beliefs with references that allow you to learn more about what a belief means. What are the consequences of moving towards or away from these beliefs? Go over the emotional aspects of such a change.

Remember that the key to making a lasting commitment to change obsolete and limiting beliefs is communication and education. The more you know about what you think is right (or wrong); the easier it will be to adopt and maintain long-lasting changes.

Ask yourself why you believe in something or where the idea originated? More importantly, find out how a particular belief system is helping you (or holding you back) in life.

The answers may surprise you, and may lead you to a more enlightened path where you have all the positive energies and support you need to lead a more successful life.

5 Natural Beauty Tips From My Grandmother

My grandmother was a wise woman. Her name was Eva. She only achieved a 4th grade education and rarely left the corners of her own home but she could cook the most magnificent Caribbean dishes you would ever hope to taste and had a wealth of knowledge about home[opatic] remedies that rivaled any wellness expert today.

She was a voracious reader, she could read an entire book in a single day.

Mami Eva (that’s how we called her) and my grandfather always used to say that books are the best teachers: they don’t lose patience, they’re always available and ready to impart their knowledge and they’ll repeat what they have to teach you as many times as you need to, until you finally get it.

Some of my most precious memories of my grandmother involved her teaching my sisters and I tricks and tips to get softer, shinier and more beautiful skin and hair. She would read about a particular herb, condiment or food that contained this or that vitamin.

Or use us as guinea pigs to try a new concoction she learned from someone else’s travels to India, Africa or the Middle East. It was all very strangely nurturing and we loved it.

Because, the truth is, they totally worked!

Here are some of the best and most effective beauty tips you’ve probably never heard of, straight from Mami Eva’s drawer:

Avocado Hair Mask

This wonderful fruit is ubiquitous in the Caribbean. We use to eat it regularly but when the avocados were too ripe to eat, we would mash them and put them in our hairs as a hair mask. The oils in the avocado can penetrate the hair molecules better than almost any other oil, nourishing it and protecting it from the sun, the environment and the chemical process.

Hydrogen Peroxide Facial Toner

This is hands down the best toner I’ve ever used. Just like it cleans wounds and prevents infections, it clears dirt, excess make-up and excess oil from your face like nothing else I’ve tried. It is wonderful to prevent and heal acne, including adult acne (which I had suffered from for years). And the best part is, there are no chemicals, or harsh residues to deal with, just water and oxygen. For oily skin, use it once a day. Normal to dry skin up to 3 times per week.

Brown Rice Mask

Apparently used by women in Asia for hundreds of years, a simple mask made of organic brown rice and water is known to help clear out blemishes and hyper pigmentation, fight wrinkles and works as sun protection. We used it, not only on our faces, but pretty much everywhere. It will leave your skin feeling hydrated, and soft like a baby. Wash the rice thoroughly first, then cover it with distilled water and let it sit overnight. The rice will become a paste that will sit at the bottom of the bowl. Remove the excess of water and apply the remaining paste on your face and body. Leave for 10 minutes before rinsing off.

Garlic For Hair Growth

The smell could be a bit strong but it is oh, so worth it. My grandmother used to say that the garlic’s anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties would help clear out and heal clogged hair follicles and allow the scalp to breathe, which in turn promotes hair growth. Generation of women in my family have used minced garlic on their hair and we all loved the end results. Mince a clove of garlic and add it to 1/3 cup of jojoba oil (we used olive oil back in the day but jojoba will help neutralize the odor a lot more effectively).  Spread it over your scalp with a cotton ball and let it sit for up to 20 minutes.

Eat For Beauty

My grandmother’s mixed heritage included African, Native American (Taínos) and Spanish. She learned cooking traditions and the use of wonderful herbs and condiments from her own grandparents. Later in life, she realized that some of those herbs consumed regularly and generously, could help you stay young and beautiful for years. So every time she made a stew, a soup or almost any other dish for us girls, she added things like coconut oil, dandelion, fennel or basil. Other great foods she used that are great for your skin and hair include tomatoes, safflower oil, carrots, spinach, aloe and sweet potatoes.

5 Detox Tips Improve Your Energy (and Libido)

How’s Your Sex Life? Having as much as you can in bed?

If you are, then by all means move on, no need to keep on reading. But if you believe there is room for improvement, welcome to the club!

And what about your energy levels? Well, I guess if there is no energy, there will be very little of the aforementioned fun, right?

So you want better sex but you’re stressed out, overworked, and let’s be honest: you’re not happy about the way you look naked anyway.

Or maybe you’re one of those who just “don’t feel like it”. You’re just not that into it as you once were.

Low energy (and potentially a subsequent low libido) can happen for many reasons: stress, lack of sleep, hormonal imbalances, excess weight, etc.

This affects millions of people around the world, men and women alike.

But intimacy and sex is an important part of human nature.

So having an unfulfilled sex life can create both physical and emotional problems.

Lack of desire can also be an indication that your body may be overly toxic. Excess of toxins can lead to weight gain, adrenal fatigue and sexual dysfunction, among other more serious conditions.

So getting rid of toxins and pollutants in your body is the first step to boosting a lagging libido, getting a hot-looking body and feeling great about yourself.

Here are 5 natural detox tips to getting your energy up and getting you all sexed up:

Eliminate Refined Sugar

Refined sugar adds to your waist line, disrupts your sleep patterns, creates havoc in your hormones and makes you age quickly. Weaning yourself off sugar will lead to increase energy levels, better mood and better sex!

Get All Your Minerals

Making sure that you consume your daily intake of all necessary minerals will help you keep your digestion strong and your organs pushing toxins and pollutants out. Minerals are needed for hundreds of functions, including balancing your endocrine system, which regulates mood and stress; exactly what your libido needs to spike up!

Practice Yoga

Yoga helps you improve breathing and posture and it also allows you to bring awareness to your own body, helping you become more comfortable in your own skin. Because you stretch and compress all areas of the body, yoga stimulates the elimination systems, helping remove waste products that can be causing fatigue, disease and a less-than-desirable libido.

Eat Green

This is a simple tip that most people have a hard time with. Green vegetables contain high amounts of chlorophyll (the stuff that makes leaf turn green). Chlorophyll helps clean your blood of heavy metals and it is a known anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic. As you detox and improve your energy, your sex drive will definitely rise up (pun intended!)

Eat Maca Everyday

Maca is a root originally from the mountains of Peru. It is a complete protein and has lots of additional nutrients as well. Maca can help enhance your immune system, balance your hormones and reduces anxiety. Maca is a natural aphrodisiac and increases libido.

While the above tips will help, most people may need to cleanse and detox their bodies of toxins at a deeper level before they can really see long-lasting results. These tips will, however be a good starting point.

5 Best-Kept Secrets To Help Your Tummy Feel Great

We’ve all been there and hate it:

The bloating, the gas, the distended abdomen, or having to untie your pants to get some a bit more comfortable.

And if your diet has been particularly poor, you are under a lot of stress or suffer from PMS it can get a lot worse: trapped gas that causes a lot of pain, fatigue, constipation, foul body odor… Ugh!

While bloating, gas and constipation can be the result of some serious health conditions, most people suffer from them because of poor eating habits and improper combination of foods.

These symptoms were part of my weekly routine since I was 6 years old. Back then, I was eating improperly combined food and lack specific nutrients in my diet.

My parents had the best of intentions and did the best they knew about but like many of us, they were misinformed about the right foods and eating habits.

It wasn’t until I learned about Chinese Medicine, Food Combination and conscious eating that all these symptoms started to disappear. And now, many years later I can proudly say that the days of stomach discomfort, bloating and painful gas are behind me.

So how did I do it, you wonder? The answer is fairly simple.

But First, it is important to learn how to prevent this from happening in the first place.

Preventing these issues from happening altogether is a much better strategy than scrambling to find solutions once the problem is there.  Some preventive measures include:

  • Listen to your body/belly and start to recognize the early symptoms of bloating and gas.
  • Wait at least 4 hours before your next meal/snack. This allows the previous meal to digest fully and leave your stomach before you stack more food on top of older food.
  • Do not talk while chewing; instead focus on fully chewing the bite before swallowing.
  • Only eat fruit alone and on an empty stomach. Fruit combined with any other food produces gas and bloating
  • Have a digestive enzyme with every meal.
  • Avoid saturated fats. Apart from cardiovascular problems, saturated fats are known to cause bloating and gas.
  • Reduce consumption of dairy and processed flour foods like white bread. They are very hard to digest and cause irritation in the intestines
  • Do not drink during a meal. Drink 30 minutes before or 45 minutes after a meal. If the food is properly chewed, you will not have the need to “chase the food down”. Liquids dilute the digestive juices, making it a lot harder to digest the food

These preventive measures will certainly help you reduce the pain, gas and bloating significantly.

But if you still suffer from these from time to time, there are some well-kept secrets in the plant world that will rock your world and will get your tummy feeling grrrrreat in no time:

Ginger: Ginger is a super root. It is a wonderful overall healthy herb that aids digestion, reduces inflammation and alleviates heartburn. It is very antiseptic, helping get rid of parasites and helps relax and soothe the intestinal track, helping manage cramping and pain.

Fennel [Seeds]: The phytonutrients in fennel give it an antioxidant quality. But it’s top quality lives in its ability to reduce gas and bloating. Chewing the seeds or making a tea will stimulate secretion of digestive juices, reduce inflammation of the stomach and intestines and helps your body absorb the nutrients better. Fennel has been a Godsend for me and I bet you it will be for you as well.

Peppermint: Cooling plant that literally soothes your stomach, relieving heartburn, indigestion, and bloating. Menthol (the active ingredient in peppermint) is both a carminative (reduces gas) and antispasmodic (reduces cramps). It is also well known for reducing nausea.

Cumin: Ayurveda considers this herb a great overall tonic for the body. And the fact that it’s delicious makes it very easy to incorporate into your diet. Cumin seeds can be made into teas that are known to help secrete enzymes in the pancreas to aid digestion and proper nutrient absorption.

Black Pepper: This is a very popular seasoning spice. But, did you know that it reduces inflammation and helps stimulate production of enzymes and digestive juices? It is also been used to treat diarrhea in India and part of Africa for hundreds of years.

In my personal experience, each and every one of these herbs have been more effective to relief stomach discomfort, bloating and gas than any over the counter remedy I have every tried (and I’ve tried them all). Try these herbs one at a time.

Remember, follow your intuition and listen to your body. It is the best way to determine which ones of these work best for you and your constitution.

Once you do, please leave a comment, letting me know which of these herbs you have used and how was your experience. If you’ve never used them, give them a try and let me know how they worked.

6 Diet Habits That Are Keeping You FAT (And What To Do About Them)

Shedding extra layers of fat and maintaining a healthy weight requires a bit of planning, a strong will and enough discipline to carry you to your goal.

Dieting is not just about knowing what to eat and how much should you eat.

It also involves learning how to eat and engaging in activities and lifestyle activities that compliment your dietary choices.

But what if some of your new dietary habits are making the process of losing weight harder? And what if other daily activities act against your weight loss efforts?

Identifying and moving away from these “fat diet habits” can be help you trim down your waist and learn what works on a long-term basis.

Fat Diet Habit #1 – Drinking Empty Calories

You may think that diet soda, vitamin water or light beer won’t add up to your caloric intake. If so, you are unfortunately, mistaken. The artificial sweeteners in soda and other diet drinks cause blood sugar and hormonal imbalances that increase cravings for more sugar, refined foods and fats.

In addition, people who drink diet soda tend to have worse eating habits than those that eat healthier meals. It seems like one bad habit leads to other bad habits so perhaps staying away from soda will help you make other healthier choices.

Alcohol, even the light kind will stress out your liver and slow down your metabolism. The liver regulates metabolism so if your liver is sluggish and stressed, you will have a hard time getting your metabolism up and running the way it needs to during the weight loss process.

What To Do About It – Drink Plenty of Water

Your body is 70% water. Not 70% soda, or coffee, or juice or vitamin drinks. Water. When you’re thirsty, drink water. If you crave something with flavor, have herbal teas (cold or hot). Sodas, and sugary juices have no place in your diet, especially when trying to lose weight.

Fat Diet Habit #2 – Eating Salty Snacks

Do you remember that advertisement about potato chips that said that you couldn’t eat just one? There is a reason for that. Sodium tells your brain to crave and ask for more so once you start eating salty foods, it will be very hard to stop.

Salty foods cause water retention, increase your blood pressure and with it, your chances of having a heart attack or a stroke. It’s a big no-no!

What To Do About It – Compliment With Spices

Salt is not the only condiment used to enhanced the flavor of food. In fact, there are dozens of condiments and spices available today that are great addition to any dish or recipe.

So head on to the market and stack up on spices like turmeric, sage, rosemary or cumin (just to name a few). If you must use salt, get raw sea salt or kosher salt and use it sparingly when cooking or when seasoning foods already in your plate.

Fat Diet Habit #3 – “Indulging” Once a Week

Indulging and overeating, even if only once a week, can seriously undermine your weight loss efforts. In today’s society, where portion sizes are out of control and empty calories abound, it will be very easy to lose control and end up adding up most if not all of the calories lost in just one day.

I’ve actually seen this happen with my clients numerous times.

What To Do About It – Reward Without Pigging Out

Be honest with yourself: can you indulge in one meal per week? If the answer is a hesitant yes, don’t even go there. The reality is that you need to work at it to stick to new healthier habits and instant gratification is not part of the equation.

If you can honestly indulge on only 1 meal per week (that’s only 1 of a total of 21 meals per week), do it, in moderation. Make sure to savor every bite thoroughly (i.e. do not swallow or binge eat) and enjoy!

Fat Diet Habit #4 – Not Sleeping Enough

No matter how busy you are, the reality of the matter is that you cannot survive long without sleep. Lack of sleep causes your metabolism to slow, premature aging and an increased risk of dozens of conditions from aches and pains to depression. It also encourages you to overeat, as your body is looking for sources of energy to help you stay awake.

Plus, if you’re exhausted, it’ll be very hard to head to the gym, isn’t it?

What To Do About It – Sleep

Sleep helps you increase your metabolism, rejuvenates, restores and heals your body. Listen to your body and intuition and make any necessary changes to add an extra hour of sleep to your routine, especially if your body is obviously craving it.

Even if you’re a busy mom with 2 jobs and a house to run, you’d be surprise how easy it is to find a bit more sleep time, especially if you get your family and loved ones involved and helping you with this.

Fat Diet Habit #5 – Not Getting Nutrition Assistance

Most of us grew up eating what was in front of us without ever questioning if it was good or not. We blindly believed our parents, who were extremely well-intentioned but also learned very little about what’s the best stuff to put in your body and why.

What To Do About It – Be Curious

Today, almost every urban area in the world has nutritional and health experts, from dieticians and nutritionists to health and fitness coaches, ready to help you figure out what works best for your body and guide you through a successful weight loss plan.

There is a plan and a style for every taste and every budget. Do your research and get knowing about the right fuel for your body.

Fat Diet Habit #6 – Eating Processed Foods

Refined flour (like in breads and most pastas and cereals), sugar, fat, salt and most dairy have little to no nutritional value. Eating foods with any of those ingredients literally makes no sense. You might as well be chewing on sugar paper or fried, doughy plastic.

They add to your waistline and provide no value other that a few seconds of instant gratification. It’s really not worth it.

What To Do About It – Stay Away From The Center Of the Supermarket

You should visit the center isles of the supermarket, to get deodorant, soap and toilet paper. Very few of the “foods” in those isles is worth anything to you. When shopping for grains, pick only whole grains. Most of what you need is in the produce section (that’s right: fruits and vegetables) and the periphery.
